NEWPORT — Police say three men were hurt trying to extinguish a fire that was spreading inside a wall at the Newport Industrial Fabrication facility where they worked.

Newport police say one of the three workers suffered serious injuries after falling 30-feet off a ladder where he was trying to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher.

Newport Police Lt. Randy Wing says the most seriously injured employee, whose name was not released, was flown to the Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for treatment.

Newport Fire Chief Jeff Chretien tells the Bangor Daily News the fire appears to have been started by workers grinding metal.

Employees returned to work after the fire was put out.
