PORTLAND  — Forty-one young Mainers and Bishop Richard Malone of the Diocese of Portland will join the thousands attending World Youth Day in Spain.

More than 29,000 pilgrims from the United States are registered to attend the event from Aug. 16-21 in Madrid. The youths will be joined by 64 American bishops and will be accompanied by 27 chaperones.

The Maine delegation will leave by bus from Portland on Wednesday. The pilgrims will spend the first three days in Fatima, Portugal.

Youth Day events will consist of Catholic teaching, cultural events and religious ritual. The closing Mass with Pope Benedict XVI will be celebrated on Sunday, Aug. 21, with an expected 2 million pilgrims.
