CHARLESTOWN, R.I. — A male harp seal that was rescued in Maine and nursed back to health in Connecticut is now back at sea after being released at a Rhode Island beach.
The seal was rescued May 29 in Phippsburg, Maine, when it was found dehydrated, lethargic and suffering from hyperthermia and seizures. Its condition was stabilized and it was transferred in June to Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut, where it gained about 60 pounds during its recovery.
It’s now about 250 pounds and rescue crews named it Poseidon, meaning “god of the sea,” in recognition of its size.
Poseidon was released early today at Blue Shutters Beach in Charlestown, R.I.
Harp seals usually travel from Canada into New England waters each winter in search of fish, then return to cooler waters in the spring.
