WATERBORO — The ringing of a one-room schoolhouse’s school bell – for the first time in more than 100 years – marks the completion of renovations to a historic building in Maine.
The Deering’s Ridge schoolhouse in Waterboro was built in 1817 and used for nearly a century. In 2006, it was donated to the Waterborough Historical Society.
Resident Teresa Lowell, who attended Saturday’s rededication, tells the Journal Tribune that “it just gives you goose bumps” to think of the children at their desks.
Renovations include a new roof, windows, paint and drywall.
Cindy Durney, of the historical society, says the town once had between five and seven one-room schoolhouses. Most of them were used for other purposes, but the Deering’s Ridge school was not.
