SCARBOROUGH – Police closed the southbound lanes of a section of Route 1 in Scarborough on Wednesday afternoon after a 52-year-old man fell from an Interstate 295 access road and was hit by a car.

Scarborough police Sgt. Eugene O’Neill said police were investigating whether the man jumped from the Scarborough Connector bridge or fell by accident. The man fell from the bridge around 2:15 p.m., police said.

O’Neill said the man, whose name was not released, was rushed to Maine Medical Center in Portland in serious condition. Police were notifying the man’s family about the accident late Wednesday.

The driver of the car that hit the man was questioned by police after the accident and released. No other information about the driver was available.

O’Neill said police received calls from people who saw someone on the overpass before the incident.

Police reopened Route 1 southbound around 5:45 p.m.
