As a new school year approaches, there are several changes in area high school athletic administration.

Melanie “Mel” Craig is the new athletic director at Deering, replacing Bill LeRoy, who resigned. LeRoy will teach health at Portland High.

Craig officially begins work Sept. 1, but has been at Deering meeting coaches, athletes and learning the workings of the athletic department.

Dave Shapiro is the new athletic director at Greely, replacing Mike Griffin, who also resigned. Shapiro started work a month ago.

Tim Spear has replaced Gerry Durgin at Gorham, who resigned at the end of last school year. Durgin is working for the Maine Principals’ Association.

Spear came from Massabesic in Waterboro. Replacing Spear at Massabesic is Brendan Scully, a former head football coach at Noble.

Gray-New Gloucester is searching for a new athletic administration after Jeff Ramish resigned. Ramish is the new athletic administrator at Leavitt Area High in Turner.

South Portland will begin a search to replace AD Kevin Woodhouse, who has resigned to teach math at Scarborough High. Woodhouse’s last day at South Portland is Friday. Applications for the position are due by Friday.

Craig spent three years as athletic administrator at Gray-New Gloucester before taking a year off to be with her family.

“I’m very excited to take the helm of the Deering Rams,” said Craig.

“When this opportunity came up, it was a great match. Deering has a great program. I’m looking to build on what’s already there,” she said.

Shapiro spent the last seven years at Hampden Academy. Prior to that, he was the athletic administrator at Wells for two years.

“My wife has family in the area,” said Shapiro, citing a reason for his move.

“Greely has a veteran staff of coaches. I’ve met with some of the student leaders who were as impressive as well. Greely has 80 percent athletic participation among its students. We have some great boosters in several different sports,” he said.
