SOUTH PORTLAND — Motorists are being advised to avoid using Broadway, by the municipal golf course, today because a water main break has forced public works crews to reduce traffic to one lane.

The lane restriction is expected to remain in effect overnight.

Lt. Robb Couture said the city is not sure what caused the break, but said the Portland Water District won’t be on scene until Monday morning to repair the damage.

In the meantime, Couture said the Water District will reduce water pressure to homes in the immediate neighborhoods, which means homeowners will continue to receive water service, but not at the flow levels they are accustomed to.

The water main break was reported around 8:30 a.m. today.
