BRUNSWICK, Maine (AP) — The civilian authority that’s in charge of the former Brunswick Naval Air Station intends to keep up the tradition of the Great State of Maine Air Show.

Executive Director Steve Levesque of the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority says he’s pleased with the air show last weekend even though Tropical Storm Irene cut down attendance Saturday and forced the cancellation of Sunday’s show.

He says the authority hopes to host air shows annually or bi-annually in the future.

He estimates that 15,000 to 20,000 people attended Saturday’s show. That’s far below past shows, which were free and sponsored by the Navy. But Levesque says the civilian-organized event broke even because the authority purchased an insurance policy to cover bad weather.
