Defending Class A state champion Cheverus opened the season today much like it had closed last season, with a resounding victory.

The Stags broke away from a 17-14 halftime lead to erupt for 42 second-half points in beating South Portland 59-21 in a Western Maine Class A football game at Cheverus.

Brent Green and Spencer Cooke both scored three touchdowns to lead the Stags. The Riots were effective throwing the ball, but committed too many mistakes in the second half.
