SANFORD – Alex Shain rushed for 264 yards and five touchdowns Friday night to help Sanford to a 49-30 victory against Biddeford in a Western Class A football opener.

Friday was the opening night of high school football around the state.

The Redskins used 20 unanswered points in the third quarter to take command.

Jon Schroder returned the second-half kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown to break a 23-23 tie. Jimmy Chaisson caught a 35-yard scoring pass from Cody Mooney and Shain scored on an 18-yard run in the quarter. Shain’s 77-yard run in the fourth put it away.

Nick LeBlond threw three touchdown passes for Biddeford, two to Zach Jacques.

MASSABESIC 39, PORTLAND 0: Jake DesRochers and Sam Chaves each scored a pair of rushing touchdowns as the Mustangs won at Waterboro.

Casey Nava started the scoring for Massabesic on a punt return. Travis Mansfield followed with a 34-yard field goal.

DEERING 41, NOBLE 8: Trey Thomes ran for three touchdowns in the first half as Deering took a 28-0 lead at Portland.

In the second half, Matt Flaherty threw a touchdown pass to James Doyle and also rushed for a score. Doyle recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown in the first half.

Derek Shute had a 5-yard touchdown run for Noble in the fourth quarter.

GORHAM 29, KENNEBUNK 6: Nick Kilborn rushed for 103 yards and two touchdowns, and Matt McKinney ran for 153 yards and one score for Gorham, which took a 16-0 halftime lead at Kennebunk.

Nick Greatorex added a 74-yard touchdown run for Gorham, which had 428 yards on the ground.

Nick Emmons threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Jason Small in the third period for Kennebunk.

FRYEBURG ACADEMY 20, LAKE REGION 16: Devine Dockery rushed for two touchdowns and Andrew Rascoe ran for a touchdown and a 2-point conversion to lead the Raiders at Fryeburg.

Dockery’s 44-yard run in the third period put Fryeburg up 20-8. Lake Region pulled within 20-16 on James Anderson’s 1-yard run with 3:50 to play, but the Raiders held in the last two minutes.

Jacob Anderson also ran for a touchdown for the Lakers.

FREEPORT 21, DIRIGO 20: Down 20-14 in the fourth quarter, James Birdy threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Chris Farley as the Falcons won at Dixfield.

Birdy and Farley also connected for a 15-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Jared Polley added a 5-yard touchdown run for the Falcons.

FALMOUTH 65, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 0: Ryan MacDonald had four carries for 87 yards and two touchdowns, and added a 70-yard interception return for the Yachtsmen at Falmouth.

Alex Derhagopian had three carries for 75 yards, including a TD run, and caught two passes for scores.

Jack Zinn had seven carries for 70 yards and a touchdown.

Matt Kingry of Falmouth completed all five of his passes for 143 yards and three touchdowns.

Jack Cooleen had two catches for 84 yards and a touchdown, and Aaron Rogers added a 45-yard interception return for the Yachtsmen.

MARANACOOK 22, TRAIP ACADEMY 6: Luke Emery rushed for 198 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries to lead Maranacook at Readfield.

“It was a back-and-forth game,” Maranacook Coach Joe Emery said. “We played really, really well.”

Jesse Evans added 85 yards rushing and a touchdown for the Black Bears.

The score was 6-6 at the half before Emery rushed for a 6-yard touchdown in the third quarter to put Maranacook up for good, 14-6.

Seth Miller caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Caleb Castonguay in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring for Maranacook.

Ian Palmer led the Black Bears with 18 tackles, 15 solo.

Cody Hinkley Roy and Evans also had key interceptions for Maranacook.

WINSLOW 20, BOOTHBAY REGION 7: Eric Crawley and Dylan Hapworth both rushed for more than 100 yards and a touchdown for Winslow at Boothbay Harbor.

Crawley rushed 13 times for 136 yards and a touchdown, and Hapworth rushed 11 times for 123 yards and a touchdown. Mike Joslyn also scored a touchdown for Winslow.

Miles Eames scored in the second quarter for Boothbay.
