Golf 9/12, a series of tournaments around the country to remember the attack on Sept. 11 and the unity the country felt on Sept. 12, 2001, will be coming to Sable Oaks Golf Course in South Portland on Monday, with a potential field of 80 players.

Sable Oaks is one of approximately 32 courses nationwide holding tournaments. The cool aspect about the day is that players will be connected throughout the country via live mobile scoring. By using their mobile phone applications, golfers will enter their scores after each hole and find out how they rank with other golfers at other sites. That’s the plan anyway.

After the tournament, there will be a projector showing the leaders countrywide. The tournament is a best-ball team competition.

Golf 9/12 is a fundraiser for various charities resulting from the terrorist attack. They are the 9-11 Memorial Fund, the Pentagon Memorial Fund, the Flight 93 Memorial, local first responders, Armed Forces Charities and Friends of Freedom Charities, including global outreach projects and educational programs throughout the world.

State representative Susan Morissette (R-Winslow), host of Maine Golf 9/12 and executive director of the Heart of America Quilt, was asked to bring a tournament to Maine by Golf 9/12 co-founder Col. Ray Horoho (Ret.). Horoho was working in the Pentagon with his wife, Maj. General Patty Horoho on 9-11. Col. Horoho will play Monday at Sable Oaks.

“Few things in our generation’s history compare with the significance of Sept. 11, 2001,” said Morissette.

“Each of us can describe exactly where we were, what we were doing and how we felt when we were confronted with the unfolding tragedy,” she said.

Added Horoho: “There were no divisions on 9/12,” he said. “To a person, we stood passionately united. We were indeed ‘One nation, under God’ “.

Registration is at 1 p.m., with a shotgun start at 2 p.m. The entry fee is $45 per person, along with a minimum donation of $12 to support the charities.

If possible, the national winner of the tournament will be announced following play. There will also be local winners. After the tournament, there will be a reception that will include remarks by Major John Libby of the Maine National Guard, Secretary of State Charlie Summers, state treasurer Bruce Poliquin and Morissette. Tenor Daniel Rodriguez will sing the National Anthem and “God Bless America.”

THE MAINE GOLF Hall of Fame will have its annual tournament and induction ceremony Thursday at the Poland Spring Resort. The tournament starts at noon. The social hour will be from 5 to 6, with dinner and inductions to follow. There will also be a live auction. The Maine Golf House and Museum will be open to the public.

Being inducted will be Andrew Lano II, a longtime PGA Tour caddie who grew up in Falmouth; Helen Plourd of Rockland, a longtime Women’s Maine State Golf Association competitor and official; Gregory Searle, the course superintendent at the Abenakee Club in Biddeford, who has over 30 years experience as a golf course superintendent; Michael Verrier, the golf coach at Thornton Academy, whose teams have won three Class A state titles, 13 division titles and five SMAA league championships; and Wilfred Benoit, a former golf professional at Poland Spring GC, Norway CC, Fairlawn GC and Summit Springs GC, who is still playing golf at 96.

Being inducted posthumously is Larry Rowe, the 1937 Maine Open champion and the first golf pro at the Purpoodock Club in Cape Elizabeth. Tickets are still available for the banquet, along with openings in the tournament. Call Gary or Toni Rees at 368-4907.

TEE TO GREEN: Entry deadline for the Maine State Golf Association’s men’s Mid-Amateur Championship is Sept. 23. The tournament will be played at Webhannet GC in Kennebunk Beach on Oct. 1-2. Ricky Jones of Thomaston is the defending champion.

• The annual men’s Tri-State Championship, pitting 16 players each from Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont in match-play format, will be played next weekend at Portsmouth CC. The defending champion is New Hampshire, which has dominated the matches, winning 41 times out of 72.
