PORTSMOUTH, N.H. — Community organizers in adjoining areas of Maine and New Hampshire are planning a celebration to mark the end of the Memorial Bridge between Portsmouth and Kittery.

On Oct. 1, the event, “A Farewell to Memorial Bridge,” will feature activities, food and music and conclude with a fireworks display.

The event will be held from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m.

The Portsmouth Herald says the event aims to offer a street-party atmosphere near the bridge and will showcase the area economy.

The 88-year-old bridge that carried U.S. Route 1 between the two states was closed to vehicles in July after it was determined to be unsafe.

A new bridge is being planned, but it’s not supposed to open until 2014.
