WINDHAM — Police say a toddler is recovering from injuries after being bitten on the head by a family pit bull in Windham.

The dog, Kappa, apparently broke free from his leash and bit the resident’s grandson at about 1 p.m. Monday. The boy is 1½ years old.

The dog was taken to Lake Region Veterinary Clinic and euthanized, police said. The dog’s brain will be tested to be sure it does not have rabies. The family said the dog’s shots were up to date but could not find the paperwork, having moved here recently from Massachusetts, police said.

The boy was taken to Maine Medical Center for treatment.

“My understanding is he’s doing fine,” said Lt., David DeGruchy.
