CASTINE – Maine Maritime Academy scored twice on fumble recoveries on the way to a 40-7 victory over Fitchburg State in a New England Football Conference game on Saturday.

Mariners quarterback Matthew Rende fumbled near the end zone, but the ball popped into the hands of Nick Bourassa for the first touchdown.

On the ensuing possession by Fitchburg State (1-3, 0-1 NEFC), Chris Rose forced a fumble that ended up in the hands of Nate Duford for a TD that gave the Mariners a 14-0 lead.

Ian Champion ran for 126 yards for the Mariners (3-0, 1-0), including a 79-yard touchdown.

WESLEY 72, HUSSON 0: Shane McSweeny was 13 of 18 for 228 yards and four touchdowns for the Wolverines (2-1), who scored five touchdowns in the first quarter and rolled past the Eagles (0-3) at Bangor.

WILLIAMS 24, BOWDOIN 21: Tom Wohlwender had three rushing touchdowns to carry the Ephs (1-0) over the Polar Bears (0-1) at Brunswick.

Zach Donnarumma had a 41-yard touchdown run to pull Bowdoin within 14-7 early in the second quarter, but Wohlwender came right back with a 7 yard TD run.

Pat Noone became Bowdoin’s career leader in receiving yards with 1,681.

AMHERST 20, BATES 7: Kevin Ferber returned a fumble 62 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter to break a 7-7 tie and help the Jeffs (1-0) get past the Bobcats (0-1) at Lewiston.

Trevor Smith passed for 202 yards for the Bobcats, who had three turnovers.

TRINITY 28, COLBY 10: The Bantams (1-0) scored two touchdowns in the second half to pull away from the Mules (0-1) at Waterville.

After Trinity opened a 14-0 lead, Colby rallied on a 22-yard field goal by David Bendit and a 3-yard option TD pass from fullback Spenser Merwin to Nick Joseph.

Colby’s Nick Kmetz completed 24 passes for 196 yards.

BOSTON COLLEGE 45, UMASS 17: Chase Rettig threw for three touchdowns and Boston College (1-3) returned two fumbles for scores to help rout Massachusetts (2-1) at Chestnut Hill, Mass.

Jesse Julmiste had a 100-yard kickoff return for UMass.

SACRED HEART 24, DARTMOUTH 21: Sacred Heart (1-2) blocked a field-goal attempt as time expired to beat Dartmouth (1-1) at Fairfield, Conn.

YALE 37, CORNELL 17: Patrick Witt threw two touchdown passes and ran for another, leading Yale (2-0) past Cornell (1-1) at New Haven, Conn.

RHODE ISLAND 21, FORDHAM 17: Travis Hurd scored on a 3-yard run with 1:13 left and Doug Johnson had an interception at the 15-yard line to give Rhode Island (1-2) a win over Fordham (1-2) at Kingston, R.I.

BRYANT 30, WAGNER 28: Jordan Brown scored on a 2-yard run with 12:59 remaining and Bryant (3-1, 2-0 Northeast Conference) held off Wagner (1-3, 1-2) at Smithfield, R.I.

MONMOUTH 24, CENTRAL CONN. STATE 12: Kyle Frazier threw a 35-yard touchdown pass as Monmouth (2-1, 1-1 Northeast Conference) opened a 10-0 lead in the first quarter and defeated Central Connecticut State (2-2, 1-1) at New Britain, Conn.
