ROCKLAND — The mother of a 24-year-old Maine man who became severely disabled after he hanged himself, but survived is suing the Knox County sheriff, the jail and a number of correctional officers.

The federal lawsuit says that Matthew Lalli told Knox County officials after he was arrested in October 2009 that he would kill himself.

Lalli’s mother and legal guardian, Cathy Penn, alleges the county should have put her son on suicide watch and taken away belongings he could use to hurt himself.

The Bangor Daily News says Lalli survived the Oct. 5 attempted hanging, but he now has a severe brain injury and will require more than $9 million of health care.

Knox County attorney Peter Marchesi says a county investigation determined it did nothing legally wrong.
