VASSALBORO — Police around Maine are being trained on how best to teach teenagers about driving, including the dangers of texting while behind the wheel.

Maine’s Bureau of Highway Safety is conducting a series of classes around the state using two computerized driving simulators. Police officers who attend the classes will use the equipment at teen driving awareness programs they teach at schools and in their communities.

A class of 20 officers is being taught on the simulators today at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Vassalboro.

Additional classes in the coming weeks are scheduled in Portland, Bangor and Augusta.

The simulators were purchased with a $20,000 grant from the Ford Motor Foundation.
