The month of October has arrived.

The month of champions.

The first hardware will be handed out Monday when golf crowns its state champions. The other fall sports are also winding down their regular season and the drama is palpable.

Here’s a glimpse at where things stand:

Golf

Boys’ soccer

Local boys’ soccer teams continue to do their thing.

Yarmouth took a 7-2-1 record, an eight-game unbeaten streak and the No. 2 spot in the latest Western Class B Heal Points standings (behind York) into Tuesday night’s showdown at Cape Elizabeth (see theforecaster.net for the game story). The most recent win came Saturday, 4-2, at Poland. Ethan Cyr and Ben Decker had first half goals, but the Knights answered both times to make it a 2-2 contest at the half. Ryan Maguire gave the Clippers the lead for good in the second half and Eamon Costello accounted for the final score with a late tally.

Field hockey

Greely’s field hockey team has won four straight, improved to 8-3 and is up to fourth in the Western B Heals. The Rangers downed host Cape Elizabeth (4-1), host Yarmouth (4-0) and visiting Lake Region (3-1) in recent action. Against the Capers, CeCi Hodgkins, Julia Maine, Sasha McLean and Eliza Porter had goals. McLean, Porter, Rachel Hanson and Jess Wilson had the goals against the Clippers. Monday afternoon, the often slow-starting Rangers got a goal from Hodgkins just 1:23 in. Porter scored just before halftime and Hanson added a second half goal. Greely fended off 14 Lakers’ penalty corners and went on to the win.

“We’re notorious for starting slowly, but our goal is always to score early so we can have breathing room,” Hanson said. “It helped us feel comfortable to keep going and score even more. We’re usually a second half team, but the first half goals were a good cushion.”

“We struggled, but come out with the win,” Greely coach Kristina Lane Prescott added. “I don’t want to say we’re peaking, but I think we’re getting comfortable in our skin. Things are coming together.”

The Rangers went to nemesis York Wednesday, host Cape Elizabeth Friday and close at Wells Tuesday.

Falmouth suffered yet another agonizing loss to York last Tuesday, falling, 1-0, late in overtime on the road, but erupted with home wins over Gray-New Gloucester (10-0) and Wells (6-0) to improve to 6-4-1 (and seventh in the Heals). Leika Scott had four goals, Emma Perron two versus the Patriots. Jillian Rothweiler had two goals against the Warriors.
