Three champions return to Scarborough Downs to join the fields in Maine Standardbred Breeders Stakes races for 3-year-old colts and geldings and fillies on Sunday afternoon. Thenor’easterbeast, Barbra Ann and Iza Bell are back after winning championships as 2-year-olds.

Four stakes races on the 14-race program will showcase the best 3-year-old pacers and trotters bred and raced in Maine. Each of the stakes races has a purse of more than $85,000.

Thenor’easterbeast and Pembroke Joe Black are the early oddsmakers’ choices in the 3-year-old colts and geldings final for pacers. Thenor’easterbeast, driven by Gary Mosher and trained by Dave Crochere, has won seven of 12 starts this year and drew the favored No. 3 post position in Thursday’s draw.

Pembroke Joe Black, driven by Heath Campbell and trained by Valerie Grondin, has won seven of 13 and starts in one of the outside positions in seventh.

Barbra Ann, driven by Jason Bartlett and trained by Kevin Switzer, has been perfect this season, winning all 11 starts. She’ll line up eighth on the outside in the fillies final for pacers.

Iza Bell, driven and trained by Ivan Davies, won eight of her 12 starts and drew the second post position in the trotters final. Cyber Cast, winner of 11 of 13 starts, also drew the second slot in the colts and geldings trotters final. Mark Athearn will be in the seat behind Cyber Cast. The trainer is veteran Donald Richards.

The fields for the four stakes races were set by the top eight finishes by points from this past season.

Racing begins at 12:05 p.m.
