GREENWOOD — The remains of the base lodge at Maine’s Mount Abram Family Ski Resort in Greenwood are being burned as part of a firefighter training exercise.

The lodge was struck by lightning in July, sparking a fire that gutted its west end. The ski area is razing the structure to make room for a new facility.

Firefighters from up to 15 area departments will ignite the lodge today and use it for training. For safety reasons, the public is not allowed to watch the training exercises.

Construction work on a temporary lodge for the upcoming season started in September. A permanent replacement is expected to open for the 2012-2013 ski season.
