BANGOR — A 22-year-old Bangor man suspected of taking the mind-altering street drug known as “bath salts” is facing charges after a relative said he destroyed two bathrooms in her home.

Police were called at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday to a home where they found Benjamin Hatfield bleeding from several deep cuts on his hands and forearms but unable to explain where the cuts came from. Officers described Hatfield as paranoid, delusional and distraught, and an ambulance was called to take him to a hospital.

Police said broken glass inside the bathrooms made it difficult to open the door.

Police say they found white powdered substances consistent with bath salts and issued Hatfield a summons for possession of the synthetic hallucinogenic drug. Additional charges may be filed.
