AUGUSTA — Female veterans from World War II through current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have been honored at the governor’s mansion.

One-hundred veterans were given personal letters and silver commemorative coins during Thursday’s ceremony. First Lady Ann LePage and state Rep. Linda Valentino led the event. The coins bear the image of a bronze plaque honoring Maine’s female veterans that hangs in the State House Hall of Flags.

Valentino, a Saco Democrat, helped lead the effort to honor Maine women veterans with the State House plaque earlier this year.

There are 10,000 Maine women veterans, but no recorded list.
