ORONO — Environmental regulators will hear more details about a proposed expansion of a landfill in Old Town operated by Casella Waste Systems.

The state Department of Environmental Protection will hold a public meeting in Orono on Monday on plans for the state-owned Juniper Ridge Landfill. The focus will be on how the project would benefit the state.

Casella hopes to expand the existing landfill, which the state has owned since 2004, by an additional 143 acres north of the currently permitted facility.

The proposed project would extend Juniper Ridge’s capacity from 10 million cubic yards to about 32 million cubic yards. Applicants say that would provide statewide disposal capacity for the next 20 to 25 years that is not presently available elsewhere in the state.
