CAPE ELIZABETH – The No. 3 Cape Elizabeth football team (6-2) will open the Class B West playoffs by hosting No. 6 Greely (5-3) at Hannaford Field this Friday night at 7 p.m.

The Capers enter the playoffs limping both figuratively and literally. In the regular season finale, the Capers dropped a 20-14 decision to No. 2 Mountain Valley, a loss that snapped a six-game losing streak, and also lost three key players according to injury.

According to reports, the Capers lost lineman and kicker Matt Ross, end Billy Brooks and quarterback Connor Maguire to injury against the Falcons. Their status for Friday’s game is unknown.

The Capers did not face the Rangers in the regular season, and the Rangers enter the playoffs on a two-game losing streak. While Greely and the Capers did not meet, they did play six common opponents this season.

The Capers and the Rangers both got wins over York, Lake Region, Westbrook and Fryeburg Academy. Both teams struggled against Mountain Valley, with the Rangers coming up on the short end of a 35-7 score and the Capers losing on Friday night.

However, there were different results when the Capers and the Rangers squared off against Falmouth. On Sept. 23, the Capers came away with a decisive 28-6 win over No. 4 Yachtsmen, but it was a different story when Falmouth took on the Rangers in the season finale on Oct. 21. In that contest, the Rangers came up just short of a win, falling 31-30 on the road.
