LEWISTON — An official says a man who kept a body hidden in a storage unit refused a request to take a lie detector test 10 years after his girlfriend went missing.

Joe Zamboni, a retired state police detective, told The Associated Press today that Frank Julian declined a lie detector test while the two were discussing Kitty Wardwell’s 1983 disappearance. He says Julian didn’t seem to care about what had happened to Wardwell.

Julian died this month at age 80. His relatives found a body inside the storage unit he rented in 1992 in Lewiston. The Medical Examiner’s Office is using DNA to identify the remains.

Zamboni picked up the case after the original investigator was promoted. He says Julian’s story of leaving the 29-year-old Wardwell in Salem, N.H., didn’t seem plausible.
