A woman is recovering from injuries after she fell from her fourth floor window while trying to climb down a rope made of bed sheets. Firefighters were called to Sunset Towers at 941 Main St. at 8:22 a.m. for a report of a woman who had been injured in a fall onto the roof over the building’s entryway.

Rescue workers found that the woman, who is in her 50s, had tied a series of bed sheet together and lowered them to within a few feet of the flat entryway rooftop, said Capt. Brian Smith. However, as she tried to climb down, the woman apparently lost her grip and fell about 25 feet.

Firefighters used the aerial ladder to rescue her from the building and then took her to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. There was no indication the woman was being held against her will or was trying to escape, Smith said, though it is unclear why she decided to climb down outside the building.

Smith would not identify the woman because of federal confidentiality laws.

Sunset Towers is an eight-story Sanford Housing Authority property described on its website as having 84 senior citizen apartments, though the building also allows people who receive government assistance for disabilities.
