PORTLAND — Mary Margaret McKee, 91, died on Nov. 2 in the presence of her family.

One of five children, McKee was born in Portland on Feb. 24, 1920 to Mary Josephine Nally and Julius Augustus Rundin. She graduated with honors from Portland High School in 1938.

Priscilla, her first daughter, was born in Germany where McKee lived with her then-husband. She later returned to Portland and raised her three children in the same house where she grew up. As a single mother, she worked hard to ensure that her children could attend Cathedral School, assisting the principal and cooking for the nuns.

Her life was driven by her sense of community and desire to serve. As a Daughter of the American Revolution and local shipyard worker, she was a true “Rosie the Riveter” during World War II. She also worked as a teacher’s aide at Jack Elementary School and served as a foster grandparent to local families for over 20 years.

Those closest to her will remember her way with words, especially in German, and her outspoken, independent nature, always standing by her beliefs and her family.

She is survived by her sister, Ann Rundin of South Portland; three children, Pricilla McKee-Meyers of Gorham, Denis McKee of Portland and Mary Ellen Gordon of Westbrook; as well as several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A celebration of her life will be held at 10 a.m. on Sat., Nov. 12 at Independent Death Care of Maine, 660 Brighton Ave., Portland.
