ROCKLAND — A Maine man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for scalding his 3-year-old stepdaughter so severely that she suffered third-degree burns over 20 percent of her body and spent months in a hospital.

Christopher Riley of Searsport was also sentenced this week in Knox County Superior Court to three years of probation after pleading guilty to charges including aggravated assault and assault on a child.

Prosecutors say the 31-year-old Riley was bathing the girl in 2009 when she complained about the hot water. Prosecutors say he ignored her complaints and left her sitting in the scalding water while he washed her hair and went outside to smoke marijuana.

The girl was scarred for life.

The Bangor Daily News reports that Riley’s attorney sought a lighter sentence.
