AUGUSTA — In the wake of Tuesday’s vote restoring same-day voter registration in Maine, Senate Democratic Leader Barry Hobbins says the Legislature will soon be faced with yet another proposal regarding how people can vote.

In today’s Democratic radio address, Hobbins says lawmakers in January will debate a Republican proposal to require voters to show photo identification before casting their ballots.

Hobbins says at first glance, the idea of providing a photo ID may seem like a harmless request. But he says it’s really an attempt to “quash access to the voting booth” and make it harder to vote.

He says there’s no need to erect what he calls “unnecessary barriers” to the voting booth.
