PERU — A Rumford police officer who was fatally shot by a Maine warden is being remembered as a family man with a good sense of humor whose childhood goal was to join the police force.

Eric Richard was shot three times Thursday in an armed confrontation with Warden Jeremy Judd. At the time, state police troopers and wardens were helping Rumford police search a wooded area for Richard, who was armed and had been reported as despondent. Judd is on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.

Family members gathered Friday at Richard’s parents’ home in Peru to share their memories.

Richard’s cousin, Michelle De Roche-Johnson, tells the Sun Journal that Richard was respected for his work with the Rumford police and through his other personal interests, including sports and music.
