EXETER, N.H. — Possible federal funding cuts to Amtrak are worrying supporters of the Downeaster passenger train serving Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
The U.S. House Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriation Subcommittee proposal would slash Amtrak funding and prohibit the use of federal funds provided to Amtrak to support the operation of any state-supported intercity passenger rail trains.

TrainRiders/Northeast Chairman Wayne Davis tells the Portsmouth Herald that the cuts are irresponsible and make no sense. Davis says cutting off the federal portion of the trains’ funding will end service.
The nonprofit, volunteer organization has sent resolutions to all the communities along the rail asking them to oppose any federal funding decreases to Amtrak.
The Downeaster runs from Portland, Maine, to Boston and will soon expand to Freeport and Brunswick, Maine.
