PORTLAND — Eight nonprofit organizations from southern Maine were presented with grants totalling $25,000 tonight at Town and Country Federal Credit Union’s Better Neighbors awards ceremony in Portland.

A record number of nonprofits – 65 organizations from York and Cumberland counties – were nominated.

The public and supporters were able to cast votes online via Facebook throughout the month of October. More than 13,000 ballots were cast.

The Better Neighbors Fund was established in 2010 to support the good work being done by nonprofit organizations.

The Animal Refuge League of Westbrook, the 19th Century Willowbrook Village in Newfield and Riding to the Top in Windham, each received $5,000.

The Homeless Animal Rescue Team in Cumberland, the South Portland Cape Elizabeth Charitable Fund, the Center for Wildlife in York, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of Northern New England and Wounded Heroes Program of Maine each received $2,000.
