PORTLAND — The medical condition of a Cape Elizabeth woman, who was injured Monday night in a collision on the Maine Turnpike in New Gloucester, has improved.

A spokeswoman for Maine Medical Center said tonight that the condition of 59-year-old Barbara Pierce has been upgraded from serious to fair.

Pierce was operating a Honda Civic when it collided with a tractor trailer truck near mile marker 70 around 5 p.m. Monday.

The accident forced state police to close both southbound lanes of the turnpike until the truck could be moved off the highway. Traffic was backed up for miles, police said.
