BELGRADE — Authorities say a Belgrade man has been seriously hurt after falling out of a tree while hunting on family property.

A spokesman for the state Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife says 58-year-old William Wadleigh broke his hip and a vertebra in the 20-foot fall on Monday. He used a cellphone to call for help and was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

Wadleigh’s brother, Howard Wadleigh, tells the Morning Sentinel his brother is in good spirits and is expected to undergo surgery at the hospital and be released later this week.

William Wadleigh was hunting deer with a black powder muzzle loader on the first day of the muzzle loader season, which runs through Dec. 10.

The fall remains under investigation.
