BOONE, N.C. — Warren Smith threw for three touchdowns and Maine held Appalachian State to 3 rushing yards in a 34-12 win today in the second round of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.

The Black Bears (9-3) dominated the ground game. Pushaun Brown rushed for 111 yards on 24 carries, including a 31-yard score, and David Hood romped 54 yards for a TD to finish with 88 yards on four carries.

Meeting for the first time since Maine won 14-13 in the 2002 playoffs, the Black Bears led 13-6 at halftime. Smith threw touchdown passes of 44 and 35 yards to Damarr Aultman, then a 21-yard TD to John Ebeling in the third quarter.

Jamal Jackson was 26 of 45 for 272 yards and a touchdown, with two interceptions, for the Mountaineers (8-4), whose string of six straight 10-win seasons ended.

The Black Bears will play at Georgia Southern in the quarterfinals.
