Mercy Hospital will open its annual Best Shot for Youth Initiative with a free-throw tournament from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Dec. 17 at the Portland Expo. The tournament is free and open to all youth. Participants will meet members of the Maine Red Claws, get free flu shots and win tickets to the Red Claws’ New Year’s Eve game against Rio Grande Valley. For more information, call 879-3605. The Best Shot for Youth Initiative raises funds to provide free sports physicals for students who don’t have a primary care physician.

Foreside Fitness and Tennis will host a Vacation Time tennis camp for juniors ages 8 to 14 on Dec. 27, 28 and 29. Sessions will run from 2 to 4 p.m. The cost is $80 per player for three days or $40 per day. There will be limited enrollment. All players must be registered and have payment in by Dec. 23.

The Western Maine Baseball Umpires Association will hold certification classes beginning Feb. 12. WMBUA provides umpires for schools and leagues above the Little League level in Cumberland and York counties. Classes run for five consecutive Sunday nights.
