CAPE ELIZABETH — The LPGA Futures Tour is coming to Maine.

Purpoodock Club in Cape Elizabeth has approved holding an LPGA Futures Tour tournament next summer.

The club’s board of governors voted 5-1 in favor of the tournament Wednesday night after members overwhelmingly voiced their approval in a club poll.

The Futures Tour is a developmental tour of the LPGA, much like the Nationwide Tour is for the PGA. The majority of LPGA players played on the Futures Tour.

The tournament will be held at Purpoodock from July 10-15. After a practice round for players, there will be two days of pro-ams, followed by the 54-hole tournament with a 36-hole cut. A total of 144 players will start the tournament.

Purpoodock hosted the Union Mutual Seniors Classic with Arnold Palmer and other golfing greats from 1984 to 1986.
