The

Midcoast Youth Theater will introduce the community to its new home on Pleasant Street with an allages production of “Seussical.”

The production debuts at 7 p.m. today in the refurbished Midcoast Performing Arts Center, 4 Pleasant St. Other performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. The production will wrap up next weekend with shows at 7 p.m. on Dec. 16 and 17, as well as at 2 p.m. on Dec. 17.

A release from the company describes the production as follows:

Be transported to the fantastical, magical world of Dr. Seuss as a host of familiar characters takes you to such places as the Jungle of Nool, the tiny world of Whoville, and Circus McGurkus.

The story is emceed by the Cat in the Hat (Pam Tondreau) and centers around Horton the Elephant (Michael Millet). Horton protects his tiny friend, Jojo (Lilly Gardiner) and the rest of the Whos while also guarding an abandoned egg, despite ridicule from the inhabitants of the Jungle of Nool, a kidnapping and a trial. Throughout his misadventures,

Horton’s smitten neighbor, Gertrude McFuzz (Phoebe Mendes), never loses faith in Horton.

The story celebrates friendship, loyalty and the power of believing, according to the release.

The family show features a cast of 44 actors, ranging in age from 5 to 58. Henry Eichman directs the production, with choreography by Linda Gardiner and musical direction by Courtney Babbidge.

“Volunteers have been working around the clock to transform the second floor (of 4 Pleasant St.) into a premier theater venue,” the release states. “Come be among the first audience members.”

Tickets cost $10 for adults or $8 for students and seniors. Advance tickets are highly recommended because seating is limited.
