PORTSMOUTH, N.H. — New Hampshire Executive Councilor Christopher Sununu says he won’t support efforts to add aesthetic cables to the replacement Memorial Bridge connecting the state to Maine.

Sununu tells the Portsmouth Herald he thinks the plan submitted by the Department of Transportation is great, and that adding cables doesn’t make sense.

The council is expected to vote on funding for the bridge on Wednesday. The cost is expected to amount to just under $90 million, with both states sharing costs.

Portsmouth architect Lisa DeStefano recently started an online petition seeking Council support for non-structural cables to be added to the bridge, to make it more aesthetically pleasing. She said it’s not her intent to slow the project or add to the cost.
