BRUNSWICK — Robert David Colfer, 84, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Saturday December 24, 2011, at Mid Coast Hospital, Brunswick ME, from complications of a heart attack.

He was born at home near Augusta, Maine October 15, 1927 to the late David C. and Marion (Fierling) Colfer. He graduated from Cony High School in 1946 and entered the U. S. Army. He was assigned to Reconnaissance Squadron 45th Cavalry Regiment, stationed at Fort Clayton, Panama Canal Zone.

On December 31st, 1948, he married Dorathy M. Hall who predeceased him on March 25th, 1961.

After his discharge in 1948 Robert worked for the Maine Dept of Transportation as a laborer and planner. In the early 1950’s he went to work at the former Hyde Windless Company, than to Bath Iron Works where he worked in the Purchasing and Safety Departments until his retirement in 1989. On July 26, 1962, he married Jean F. Norton of Bath whom he met while working at the B.I.W. Hardings Facility. He was a man of strong faith and volunteered for many years as an usher and C.C.D. Instructor at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bath. He was active in the Bath area community serving on the Board of Directors for the Mid Coast Credit Union. In his retirement Robert could frequently be found at City Council Meetings making his point of view heard but mostly he choose to stay close to home puttering around the house and spending time with his grand children.

Robert was predeceased by four sisters: Nancy, Mary, Joanne and Mildred. Four brothers: Norman, James, Clifford and Leslie and three children Patrick David Colfer, Michael Francis Colfer, and Margaret Anne ( Colfer) Adams.

He is survived by his wife Jean Francis (Norton) Colfer of Bath; two siblings his sister Elizabeth (Colfer) Daniels & husband Joseph of Lewiston and his brother Russell Colfer & wife Rolande of Augusta; six children: Anne ( Colfer) Richardson & husband Barry of Myrtle Beach, So.Carolina, Robert C. Colfer of Bath, David F.Colfer & wife Monique (Young) of Lisbon Falls, John A. Colfer & wife Heather ( Claypool) of Woolwich, Peter M. Colfer & wife Melissa ( Martin) of Feeding Hills, MASS, Daniel C. Colfer & wife Christine (Savage ) of Portland, CONN; son in law: Michael Adams of Lisbon; eight grand children: Paul E. Richardson and wife Nicole of Myrtle Beach, So. Carolina, Patrick C. Richardson and partner Megan Goulet of Boston, Mass, Coery C., Maxwell J., Rowan and Harison Colfer all of Bath, Anna Grace and Sean Colfer of Feeding Hills, Mass and two great grandchildren Caroline and Ella Grace Richardson of Myrtle Beach, So. Carolina.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, December 29th from 1:00 – 3:00pm and 5:00 – 7: 00pm at the David E. Desmond Funeral Home, 638 High Street, Bath. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, December 30th at 11:00am at St. Mary’s Church, 144 Lincoln Street, Bath. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers donations be made in Roberts memory to the Coastal Humane Society, 30 Range Road, Brunswick, ME 04011.
