LEWISTON — Mt. Ararat darted out to a 21-4 first-quarter lead en route to a 46-23 Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference high school girls basketball victory over Lewiston on Tuesday.

Leah Hitchcock had a game-high 16 points for the 5-2 Eagles, while Mallory Nelson added 12 points, Kristi Wiley eight and Caitlin LaFountain six. Mt. Ararat finished eight of 13 from the foul line.

Mt. Ararat struggled in the second quarter, scoring one point as the Eagles led 22-9 at the half. Mt. Ararat found its stroke in the third, taking a 33-14 lead.

Jannessa Talarico had three 3-pointers and a team-high 11 points for 0-7 Lewiston.

Mt. Ararat is slated to visit Messalonskee on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Visiting Brunswick overcame an injury to guard Becky Champagne, pulling away in the fourth quarter for a KVAC win at South China.

“Becky injured her ankle in the first quarter, but we continued to have energy throughout the game,” said Brunswick coach Sam Farrell, whose team improved to 4-4 and visits Mt. Blue on Friday.

The Dragons jumped out to an 18-10 lead in the first quarter, and posted leads of 28-19 at the half and 38-32 through three quarters.

“We were 12 of 16 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter,” said Farrell, whose squad finished 16 of 29 at the charity stripe.

Julia Champagne had 12 points, Mel Bryant 11, and Liz Faulkner and Lyse Henshaw 10 points each. Libby Arford had a team-high eight rebounds, Henshaw added seven caroms, with Faulkner blocking six shots, dishing out four assists and picking up four steals. Lauren Carlton added four assists.

Meryl Bond led Erskine (1-6) with 10 points. The Eagles were 14 of 26 from the foul line.

In Class B action Tuesday in Bath, host Morse raced out to a 17-0 first-quarter lead and never looked back.

The Shipbuilders, now 3-4 and scheduled to host Nokomis on Friday, led 17-0, 21-9 and 37-13 at the quarter breaks.

Lauren Crosby, Sadia Crosby and Katie Henrikson each scored 10 points, while Tori Field chipped in with nine.

Sadie Crosby also had eight rebounds, Field six steals, and Lauren Crosby and Brianna Bigelow five steals each. Morse came away with 28 steals.

Anna Piotte led Mt. View with nine points.

At the foul line, Morse was eight of 12 and Mt. View five of 12.
