WESTBROOK — Community members can weigh in on the Westbrook School Department budget at a forum tonight.

The forum starts at 6 p.m. at the Westbrook Middle School on Stroudwater Street.

Superintendent Marc Gousse announced a proposal last month to close the Prides Corner School and reconfigure classes for kindergarten through fifth grade.

Under the plan, Westbrook would have three elementary schools for kindergarten through fourth grade. Fifth-graders would attend the middle school.

Westbrook now has two schools, including Prides Corner, for kindergarten through second grade. Two other elementary schools serve third through fifth grades.

The reconfiguration is one of three plans proposed by the administration to address a $2.4 million shortfall. The other two plans involve cutting positions and programs by proposing no increase to the budget; or by making a list of priorities based on the district’s strategic plan.

Administrators have said closing Prides Corner and reconfiguring grades would be the least detrimental to students.
