BATH — Mt. Ararat High School swim coach Mike Smith said his team is still trying to put the right swimmers into the right events.

Morse coach Todd Marco concurred.

The high school swim season is in full swing, with the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference championships right around one month away, so coaches are tweaking things here and there, trying to put together the best combinations possible.

The Eagles and Shipbuilders hit the Bath Area Family YMCA pool on Friday, with Morse coming out on top 116-48 in the girls meet, and 104.50-60.50 in the boys.

“We had some good times out here today, with a lot of kids qualifying,” said Marco, whose team hosts Camden Hills this upcoming Friday. “We are pretty much to the point of having one meet a week, so we are training hard. Today, we had some results that will change the lineup a little, which is normal for this time of the year.”

Smith liked what he saw, especially in two exciting finishes in relay races, with his Eagle boys’ 200 free team and girls 400 free competitors picking up close victories.

“It’s nice to see the kids get excited during a race and to watch another swimmer knock a minute off her 500 free time,” said Smith. “I want to make sure I get the right swimmers into the events, but I don’t want to show my hand too early either.”

The relays

Both the Morse girls and boys won the 200-yard medley relay. The Shipbuilder girls had a close race as Bronwyn Morissette, Catie Luedee, Allison Plummer and Guerin Morissette edged the Mt. Ararat crew of Abby Parker, Celia Ouellette, Hannah Kincaid and Carrie Smith by just .61-seconds.

In the 200 free relay, the Mt. Ararat boys took a big lead, with anchor Tim Prindall holding off the charge of Morse’s Jake Olsen. The Eagles (Jameson Bryant, Ben Wade, Zachary Ormsby and Prindall) posted a time of 1:44.95, while the Morse foursome (Drew Ceglinski, Oliver Kruze, Albin Werwaiss and Olsen) touched in 1:45.03.

The Mt. Ararat girls finished the night in style, winning the 400 free relay. The Eagles’ anchor, Ouellette, entered the pool nearly a full pool length behind, but rallied to win 4:12.42 to 4:12.45.

“That was an exciting race, and Celia did an amazing job coming all the way back,” said Smith.

“We like those close races as fans because you see the kids really get excited,” said Marco.

Banger, Olsen and Werwaiss each won two individual events for Morse. Banger took the 50 free ( 24.72) and 100 free (54.19), Olsen the 200 individual medley (2:12.62) and 100 breaststroke (1:10.22), while Werwaiss was tops in the 200 free (1:58.62) and 500 free (5:21.23).

Also winning for Morse was Josh Valentine in the 100 backstroke (1:07.16).

Mt. Ararat’s Ben Wade captured the 100 butterfly in 1:06.65.

Ouellette was a multiple winner for the Eagles, capturing the 200 free (2:04.22) and 100 back (1:05.24), with teammate

Abby Parker winning the 100 butterfly in 1:05.90.

Touching first for the Shipbuilders were Luedee (200 IM, 2:31.14), Guerin Morissette (50 free, 26.67), Clare Tolan (100 free, 1:09.67), Casey Bonnett (500 free, 6:07.31) and Allison Plummer (100 breast, 1:22.43).

The Eagles have a short time to rest, with Brunswick up next on Tuesday at Bowdoin College. The meet is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m.
