AUGUSTA (AP) — Maine Chief Justice Leigh Saufley will address lawmakers in an annual update on the third branch of state government.
Saufley presents her State of the Judiciary address today to a joint House-Senate session in the State House.
Courthouse security and providing adequate legal services for the poor have been priorities for Saufley.
In October, the chief justice announced a program to publicly recognize attorneys who provide free legal services to people in need. She said donated services are especially important in today’s harsh economic climate.
In last year’s address to lawmakers, Saufley said civil cases have been on the rise in Maine courts, while criminal cases have been falling.
