RUMFORD – The No. 10-ranked Gray-New Gloucester girls basketball team kept its season alive on Wednesday night, going to Rumford and pulling off a 58-50 upset of seventh-seeded Mountain Valley in a Class B West prelim game.

The win moves the Patriots into the quarterfinal round where they will square off against No. 2 York on Feb. 21 at 3:30 p.m. in the Portland Expo.

The Patriots went on a 17-9 run to open the game, and despite being outscored 11-10 in the second quarter, held a 27-20 lead at the half. Points were hard to come by in the third as the teams combined for just 13 points, with Mountain Valley cutting the Patriot lead to 33-27. In contrast, the fourth quarter was an absolute shootout as Gray-New Gloucester outlasted the Falcons 25-23 in the quarter to take the win.

Maria Valente led the Patriots with 22 points in the game, eight of which came in the wild final quarter. Haley Cote scored 11 of her 17 points in the fourth quarter for the Patriots.
