BELFAST — Army veteran Jeremy Gilley managed to survive multiple tours of duty in Iraq without injury.

But on Dec. 18, while helping an injured driver on Route 3 in Palermo after a crash, a minvan crashed into Gilley and pinned him between the two cars. Gilley, 27, lost both of his legs.

On Saturday, U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud, D-Maine, headlined a charity fundraiser for Gilley at the American Legion Post 43 in Belfast, according to the Bangor Daily News.

Michaud described Gilley as selfless and heroic, and said he deserves the nation’s support.

“I’m here today to see what help I can do to see him and his family get through these difficult times and to show my support both morally and financially,” Michaud said.

According to the organizers, Michaud gave an undisclosed amount of money to the family, and also donated numerous raffle prizes to help raise money at the event.

In a speech, Michaud also urged others in attendance to give as much as they could.

Numerous Waldo County residents and veterans organizations have also hosted potluck dinners and fundraisers for Gilley, according to the Daily News.
