Tonight is likely going to be the best time to view the Northern Lights in Maine because the National Weather Service is forecasting rain and clouds for Thursday night.

The Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, is the result of a solar storm heading toward Earth. It is expected to hit Earth’s atmosphere between 1 and 5 a.m. Thursday.

Scientists say it is the largest recorded solar storm in five years. It started Tuesday night with a massive solar flare that sent charged particles speeding toward Earth.

“For tonight, we will have a chance of seeing the Northern Lights, though it could be hit or miss depending on where you live,” said Margaret Curtis, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Gray.

Curtis said the forecast calls for rain Thursday night and lasting into Friday morning. The solar storm is expected to end Friday morning.
