The maximum security inmate who snuck out of his cell to have sex with a female inmate over the weekend was transferred from the Cumberland County jail to the state’s Supermax facility in Warren.

Arien L’Italien, 23, of Biddeford, was moved to the state’s top security prison today.

“If he wants to play games, he can go up there where life is not so rosy,” said Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce. Joyce said L’Italien earned his way to the Supermax in Warren by failing to follow rules in society or in the jail.

L’Italien is a federal detainee and the responsibility of U.S. Marshal for Maine Noel March. He faces charges of trying to kill deputy marshals during a shootout in Portland’s Parkside neighborhood when he was arrested in January.

L’Italien allegedly was able to jimmy the lock on his maximum security cell door and crawl to the cell of a female inmate, who was housed in the woman’s section of the maximum security unit. Karla Wilson, 25, also had packed plastic into the locking mechanism of her door so it would not lock securely, and was able to open it, admitting L’Italien, jail officials said.

He was caught sneaking back to his cell at 12:50 a.m. Saturday, an hour after he snuck out.

Joyce noted that the recreation in the Supermax facility is taken with handcuffs and ankle shackles.
