Beginning at 7 o’clock this morning, residents of Cape Elizabeth can register for the 15th running of the Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race, scheduled for Aug. 4.

Last year, the 600 slots allotted to town residents filled in 51 minutes. General registration begins at 7 a.m. Thursday with 4,000 more slots available.

Once they are filled – which took all of eight minutes last March – a week-long lottery process will distribute another 1,850 entries, up 100 from a year ago.

“We took a look at last year’s success and added some additional load capacity,” said David Weatherbie, volunteer race president. “Theoretically, if people could type fast enough, we could close out in one minute.”

The lottery, to be drawn March 23, includes provisions for couples and families. It costs $40 to enter the race and $5 to enter the lottery.

Bib transfers – although not from town residents to non-residents – will be allowed between May 1 and June 30 for a $5 fee.

This year’s designated beneficiary is The Center for Grieving Children.

All registration is done through the race website, beach2beacon.org. Registration for the Kids Fun Run begins Friday and continues through June, although parents may also sign up their children the week of the race.
