PORTLAND — All of those memories of 80-degree heat are fading as cooler temperatures return, with parts of northern New England expecting single-digit temperatures overnight.

It’s cold enough that several ski areas including Loon in New Hampshire, Sunday River, Sugarloaf and Saddleback in Maine, and Jay Peak in Vermont, are resuming snow-making operations.

Ethan Austin from Maine’s Sugarloaf says “winter is definitely not done.”

Renae Moran, tree fruit specialist at the University of Maine cooperative extension, says apple trees are budding but that they’re not far enough along to be hurt by the cold. Wild blueberry plants should be OK, as well.
