GRAY – Kyle Nielsen allowed five hits while pitching into the seventh inning and smacked an RBI double to highlight the go-ahead rally as Gray-New Gloucester opened its Western Maine Conference baseball season with a 9-4 win Friday over Poland.

The Patriots trailed 2-0 before scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Nielsen doubled home Kevin Cavallaro, Justin McKenna scored on a throwing error, and Tim Lerette knocked home Nielsen with a sacrifice fly.

The Patriots added six runs in the fifth. Adam Healey, Ethan Ridge and Austen Keenan each drove in runs.

FRYEBURG ACADEMY 4, WELLS 2: Alex Roscoe struck out seven, gave up four hits and walked three as the Raiders (1-0) beat the Warriors (0-1) at Wells.

Fryeburg Academy got a run in the first and made it 3-0 in the second with the help of three walks and two errors.

GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 12, POLAND 0: Sammie Wilkins hit a two-run double in a five-run first inning, and Zoe Adams had a two-run single in the fifth, when the Patriots added five more runs against the Knights at Gray.

Maggie Chaplain pitched a two-hitter with four strikeouts and no walks. Maria Valente had three hits.

FRYEBURG ACADEMY 20, WELLS 1: Winning pitcher Sarah Harriman drove in five runs and allowed one hit as the Raiders beat the Warriors in a five-inning game at Wells.

Harriman hit a two-run homer in the first inning. Maddie Pearson had a two-run triple in the fifth.

The Warriors’ run came on a homer by Kate Tufts in the bottom of the fifth.

DEERING 4, CHEVERUS 2: Matt Flaherty scored two goals to pace Deering in a win over host Cheverus.

Isaac Santerre and Anthony Verville also scored for the Rams, who took a 2-0 lead in the first quarter and got their last two goals in the fourth quarter.

Jack Sutton scored both Cheverus goals in the second quarter.

BRUNSWICK 14, OXFORD HILLS 0: Cameron Glover scored four goals and added an assist for the Dragons in their season opener at South Paris.

Alex Croatti added two goals and an assist. Ten players scored.

MT. ARARAT 9, MESSALONSKEE 6: Jonathan Brown scored three goals and set up another as Mt. Ararat downed Messalonskee at Topsham.

Nick Oram had two goals and three assists, and Jeremy Hart also scored twice for Mt. Ararat, which never trailed.

LEWISTON 9, EDWARD LITTLE 0: Brandon Tyner scored four goals as the Blue Devils beat the Red Eddies in an opener at Auburn.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

WELLS 20, FRYEBURG ACADEMY 4: Jasmine Loukola had eight goals and three assists to help the Warriors overwhelm the Raiders at Wells.

Kelly Beisswanger and Heather LaPierre each finished with three goals and two assists.

Emily Haggie scored twice for Fryeburg.
